Hand-thrown Pottery by Emily Asenath-Smith, PhD
I first learned to throw pottery from Marty Phinney when I was 7 years old. Through my years of instruction with Marty, I learned about throwing stoneware, earthenware, and porcelain; glazing and firing; sculpture, slab work, and casting. By the time I reached high school, I had my own studio in my mother’s basement and an apprenticeship with Michael Kline. I spent quite a lot of time at Stonepool Pottery, making pots and firing the kiln, which prepared me to attend a Fall Concentration course in wood-fired pottery with Mark Shapiro at Penland School of Craft.
